UDF: Specifying File URI as HelpTopic

Aug 15, 2013 at 7:25 AM
Hi there,

I'm trying to implement a solution that will allow users to access either online help or offline help on a UDF HelpTopic based on whether or not their PC has internet connection.

I'm able to use an HTTP URI as a HelpTopic for a specific function (Eg: http://www.google.co.za/).

Now the actual problem comes in: I need to have a local html file to direct to, to then check if the internet connection is online or not, and then based on that to redirect to the relevant file.

The redirection is working (not part of this question) - but I don't seem to be able to specify my HelpTopic as a file URI.

Here's my attribute header:

<ExcelFunction(Description:="My Function Description", Category:="", HelpTopic:="file:///C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MyFile\index.htm")> _
Public Shared Function GLCompanyName300(ByVal myString As String) As Object
   'My function inserted here
End Function
So in short - are File URIs supported?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Hi,

At the moment Excel-DNA would break file urls, even if Excel supported them.
But I had a quick look, and it seems Excel really does not support them either - I couldn't get it to work at all.

You might have to make a .chm file with the online redirection somehow.
